Pros

Amazing Graphics, Great Single player, Online was a nice addition, No loading screens during campaign

Cons

Shooting in close quarters can be challenging.

Introduction

Naughty Dog released the original Uncharted: Drakes Fortune back in 2007 and it was a big release for Naughty Dog, and the PS3. It has since sold over one million copies. Since then, they have been working on their next big title, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Uncharted 2 has sold over 3.5 million copies as stated in the February NPD.

Gameplay

It is just like Christmas, you have opened the case, and out pops that brand new Uncharted 2: Among Thieves disc, you let your PS3 devour the disc, and get ready to go, When you first choose your difficulty level in the campaign however, It takes a good 5 minutes to load. Once you get it going though, you really start to admire the graphics this game really has. This game has the best graphics I have ever seen on a console; they are even comparable to Crysis’s graphics!

The starting scene to this game is amazing, you are not just watching a cut scene, you are playing in one, you wake up in a half destroyed train hanging over the edge of a cliff, Nate is badly injured and you have to guide him to safety, it is a much better introduction technique than seen in some video games. Rather than having to play through a boring side level, the level itself is the introduction, and what an introduction it is, they start it off like Star wars, you play through a part in the middle, and then you have to play through it again, except its much faster and there are more fighting scenes.

Uncharted’s game play mechanic is a much more refined version of Uncharted: Drakes fortune, the climbing, combat and puzzles all just seem to flow and work together much better, the climbing isn’t as finicky, and there are some parts in the game where I had to ask a friend what exactly I had to do, that is the level of difficulty and determination Naughty Dog put into this masterpiece. As I pointed out earlier, the combat is good, but a little bit tricky in close quarters, the movement is heavy, and

This can restrict your ability to kill an enemy in time, this can translate into you dying quite often if you are playing on Crushing difficulty, thankfully, the game has fairly good checkpoints, and will never save in a bad location.

The campaign in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves takes you all over the world from the mountains of Nepal, to the lush jungles of Borneo on your fight to stop the main villain Zoran Lazarevic from gaining ultimate power by getting access to the Cintamani stone, it is said in the game that rulers like Genghis Khan only had a sliver of the Cintamani stone, and even he had great power. The Campaign is about 10 hours long, and will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. It also has lots of replay value, because of the many trophies, and treasures you can collect.

Once you beat the campaign, you should definitely head over to the multiplayer, the online in this game is intense, and is noteworthy, Naughty Dog could sell this game for the single player alone, but adding online is frosting on the cake. It has a ranking system, and instead of earning experience, you gain cash, you can also have 2 Perks, and may choose your favourite villain and hero to use for each game.

Graphics/Audio

This game looks and feels absolutely awesome, from the time you put the disc in, until the time you take the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves disc out, your jaw will be on the floor the graphics are that good. The graphics from the cut scenes to the actual gameplay do not change at all, creating an amazing cinematic feel to this game. All of the Cut scenes from this game were acted by the voice actors and it all blends very well. I hope that someday, graphics like these will be the standard set for video games.

As mentioned in the last paragraph, all of the voice actors did the acting, and it turns out really well, this game has sound almost as good as the graphics. The soundtrack in Uncharted was done very well with many of the scores being done by Greg Edmonson, the sound greatly affects the game, and it makes it very powerful.

Ratings

Graphics – 10/10
Gameplay – 9/10
Replayability – 8/10
Final Score – 9/10

“Sonic Team has officially announced that the 2D Platformer will be released in summer 2010 for download.”

SEGA and Sonic Team have finally announced their secret title that they have been teasing the gaming community with the past several months. Codenamed “Project Needlemouse,” the game has been revealed to be Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. It will be available for download on Nintendo’s WiiWare service, Sony’s PlayStation Network, and Microsoft’s Xbox Live. There is also one more platform it will appear on, currently in secret though. No inclination of price or specific release date has been announced as of yet.

The speculation began back in September when SEGA released a trailer for a title called Project Needlemouse, and showed Sonic racing across the screen. The video made huge emphasis on the fact the game will be focused on speed, also stating that it will be in HD and released in the summer. Since then, Sonic Team has been teasing the fans more and more, encouraging them to enter contests and submit artwork. Eventually, they initiated the “Character Countdown Challenge.” This was an image with several Sonic characters listed on it. If fans submitted enough of their artwork to the site, they would slowly take characters off the list. Over the course of the week, it was shown that Sonic would be the only playable character in the game.

The game will use 3D characters with 2D backgrounds, in vein of the New Super Mario Bros. games, and the upcoming Metroid: Other M. It will take place right after Sonic & Knuckles ended, with Eggman somehow surviving their latest battle.

Furthermore, due to the “Episode 1” subtitle, it is safe to assume that Sonic Team will release more episodes of the game, if it proves popular. Look for the first one this summer, and see if the old Platformer can successfully return to his roots.

Cons

Weaker story than original; Majority of weapons and plasmids are carried over from the first; Not many changes in gameplay; Rather short; Playing as a Big Daddy isn’t satisfying at all; Less suspenseful and surprising than original; Big Sister fights aren’t innovative or enjoyable in any way; Underwater sections are rather dull and useless

Introduction

BioShock is one of the greatest games I have ever played. It completely abolished the typical FPS rules and regulations and featured a groundbreaking story. With a game as perfect as that, it raked in millions of sales. Of course the Publisher, 2K Games, wanted a sequel. Unfortunately, the original developer, Irrational Games, wanted to focus their efforts on a new idea, and never intended to work on more BioShock. 2K Games turned to one of their other companies, 2K Marin, to handle the job. Enormous pressure was put on the team, for it was their job to do the impossible: make another perfect game.

Graphics/Audio

One of the greatest attributes from BioShock was its breathtaking visuals. The sequel’s graphics are nearly identical to the original’s, with minor improvements here and there, although sometimes they will even appear worse. For 2007, these are fantastic graphics, but they just don’t work well in 2010. However, the art style still remains incredible. All of Rapture remains similar in style to the first game, fortunately, and the adventure really feels like it takes place in the 50’s. The developers did a fantastic job with the culture and environments, and the old music was a great touch. This is a game that will make you impressed as you play it, and you’ll feel truly awed.

Besides the amazing art and level design, the voice acting is just incredible. Some standouts are Augustus Sinclair, who serves as your guide throughout the game; Stanley Poole, who used to run the newspaper; and Mark Meltzer, who is trying to rescue his daughter from Rapture. While the voice acting you hear from the main characters is well done, it truly shines in the audio diaries. The old voice actors of Andrew Ryan and Atlas return, and they are truly wonderful to listen to. Seeing how there are 129 of these to listen to, everyone’s needs will surely be met.

Character design has also been greatly improved. Splicers are now much more individual and unique, although some voices return from the original. It is really a mystery to me why so many of the splicers have the same exact voice and say the same commands, but their outward appearance is definitely worth noting.

Story

Ah, the story. The first BioShock truly had one of the most engrossing, interesting, and well-written stories I have ever witnessed in a game. It was completely unique, and gamers had never seen the like of it before. To their credit, 2K Marin delivers another enthralling adventure that will please most. Is it on the same level as the first? No, but it gets close. Returning to Rapture slightly ruins the feel of the game. The city is no longer the mysterious dungeon it once was. You expect the unexpected, and know what you will find around the corner. However, the story is filled with an amazing cast of characters, plot twists, and awesome moments that will encourage you to keep playing. Furthermore, the story keeps up at an impressive pace, and will not bore most players.

When you first start the game, you take the role as Subject Delta, the first successful Big Daddy prototype. You are on a quest to find your “daughter,” Eleanor. While slow at first, it picks up momentum more and more throughout the game. This is a huge step up from the original, where the plot sagged towards the end and felt like a drag.

Gameplay

In addition to the revolutionary story, the BioShock games are known for their innovative spin on the FPS gameplay. Rather than the run-and-gun style of play traditionally used in most shooters, BioShock 2 presents you with a far more intelligent and rewarding style of play. There are roughly nine “levels” in the game, and you can travel across the entire level as many times as you want until you choose to leave the place. This is where the RPG elements arrive. In the level, one can find upgrades and items to make themselves stronger. Enemies don’t simply rush at you; oftentimes you’ll see them in groups of two or three, and won’t come near you until you startle them. Of course, there are many variations of enemies.

The most common enemies, splicers, are unfortunately very similar to the original. Leadhead, Houdini, Spider, and Thuggish splicers all return and are exactly similar. However, the Nitro splicer has been replaced by the Brute splicer, a massive, mutated beast. In addition, more variations of Big Daddies have been added. Along with the Bouncer and Rosie from the first, there are now Rumblers and Alpha series Daddies. The amount of enemy types feels just right for the game, with splicers appearing frequently throughout the game, and with Big Daddies still sending chills down your spine.

However, the newest enemy type which is one of the main focuses of the game is the Big Sister. These are young women who have grown up from being Little Sisters. Their job is to kidnap young girls from the shore to bring them to Rapture, and to keep the flow of ADAM, the game’s power and energy, flowing. Whenever you harvest or rescue every Little Sister in the level, you’ll need to face one. The developers were hyping these fights like there was no tomorrow, even so much that they had to delay the game to improve the experience with them. Unfortunately, the Big Sisters are nothing more than a standard fight against a really powerful enemy. They are certainly not more fun than any other fights, and are not difficult to kill. This was, by far, one of the biggest disappointments of the game.

Of course, the weapons have been improved, with the game’s stronger focus on combat. Some guns return, while others have been changed. The Tommy gun is now a massive Gatling gun; the crossbow is now a spear gun; and the wrench, pistol, and chemical thrower are gone. Instead, we have the rivet gun, one of the Rosies’ weapons, and the drill. The drill is a wonderful new weapon that is extremely enjoyable to use … while it lasts. Unfortunately, the drill is powered by gas, which runs out quite quickly.

In addition to weapons are plasmids. Plasmids are enhancements to your body that grant you the power of using mystical abilities. For example, plasmids allow you to do a number of actions, such as shoot bolts of electricity and fire out of your hands, or set up a decoy to lure splicers away. However, the plasmids are nearly the exact same as they were in the first BioShock. The same applies with gene tonics, which give you more abilities. One great improvement, on the other hand, is the capability of dual-wilding plasmids and weapons at the same time. This allows very smooth combat, and will definitely give you an advantage in Rapture.

Another improvement is hacking. In the first game, hacking was a ridiculously complex activity that resulted in minimal reward. In this game, hacking is now much easier, and the rewards you receive are fitting. Additionally, hacking takes place in real time, adding suspense.

Thankfully, researching has taken a turn for the better. Rather than having to snap photos at every enemy you see, research is now done with a video camera. Simply start recording the enemy, and fire everything you have at it. Eventually, your progress will level, presenting you with fulfilling awards.

Because you’re a Big Daddy, you have the outstanding ability to interact with Little Sisters. Tagging along with these little girls will result in you getting a great deal of ADAM. While your buddy is gathering the sweet juice from a corpse, you’ll need to defend her (and yourself) against a horde of splicers that will come for you, eager for ADAM. At any time, you can choose to harvest her. Harvesting Little Sisters is another word for killing them, and collecting all their ADAM. Choosing to rescue them will only result in half as much ADAM, but you will receive compensation for your good deeds frequently.

Yes, moral decisions truly shine in BioShock 2. In the game, there are three main characters that you can choose to assassinate, or walk away from. Couple this with the ability to have your way with the Little Sisters, and the story becomes yours to shape. Your decisions have an enormous effect on the outcome of the story in the end; the game itself offers six different endings, based on the moral choices you made.

Finally, you play the entire game as a Big Daddy, the mascot of the series. These beings were enormous threats in the first game, leaving gamers (including myself) eager to play as one. However, what I found was a huge blow to me. You are, in fact, weaker than you were in the first game, where you played as an average human being. The game in noticeably more challenging than the first, and you’ll be finding yourself taking many trips to the Vita-Chamber. Your weapons won’t feel very powerful against splicers. The only differences are your ability to use the drill, and the ability to travel outside in the ocean. Like the Big Sisters, the ocean sections were enormously overhyped. They entail walking along the ocean floor for a few moments, only to return inside Rapture. These moments offer nothing exciting, nothing rewarding, they are only included to add a bit of variety. Playing as a Big Daddy had massive potential, but unfortunately, it fell short of being a great change from the original.

Replayability

As I stated before, the game is shorter than the first. It will take approximately ten hours to complete, but you will add a few hours if you’re hunting for collectibles. Speaking of those, there are plenty of items to find, such as the 129 audio diaries and the fourteen weapon upgrade stations. The game rewards you for playing longer and taking the time to explore the world and make your character more powerful. I have also found the game to be almost equally fun the second time through as the first time, and to be honest, I could go for a third.

Besides the singleplayer campaign, the online multiplayer was included for the first time in the series. At first, I was understandably concerned with how this mode would turn out, due to the first game being completely focused on the story. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find this an overall enjoyable and rather addictive way to experience Rapture.

The ten maps it features are all based off of areas from the first BioShock, and all of them capture the feeling from the original game, and I certainly loved playing on them. The multiplayer is somewhat story-based. It takes lace about one year before the first game, when the civil war between Atlas’s followers and Ryan’s. In an attempt to make money, Sinclair Solutions is sponsoring the soldiers by allowing them to test out their plasmids and tonics. You can choose one of six characters (or eight if you pre-ordered) to play as, each with their own back-story, melee weapon, and catchphrases.

The various modes include the standard FPS ones, such as team deathmatch, free-for-all, capture the flag, etc. Of course, all have different names to enhance immersion. However, there are a few standouts, such as ADAM Grab. There are even a few plasmids and tonics unique to the multiplayer, making the online experience a must-have for all fans of BioShock. Overall, it’s a fun, crazy encounter, but it will get you addicted and you’ll love playing it.

Final Recommendation

If the original BioShock had never been released, and this was released in its place, it would have been hailed almost as well as the first one was. The game can be viewed as fantastic, or mediocre. While it is, in fact, an amazing game with great combat and gameplay, it copies nearly everything from the first game. There are simply not enough structural changes that are necessary to make the game stand out. Fans of the first and newcomers alike will enjoy the game, but may be left feeling somewhat disappointed. For all it tried to be, it ended up becoming too much of the same. Yes, there will be a BioShock 3, but I sincerely hope it is not another rehash such as this. Then again … Who could resist another trip to Rapture?

Codemasters released Colin McRae: Dirt 2 in September 2009 for consoles, and on Windows Live in December. There are no surprises with this game, it’s a racer, an excellent one at that…

Gameplay

Starting out, you put in your name and what you would like other drivers to call you. This is odd because your name could be Greg, but the drivers would call you John; it doesn’t make much sense. Once you start racing, you won’t want to stop. You start on easy difficulty races and work your way up to pro by completing the X Games tournaments. As you race, you earn experience and gain levels which grants you access to more regions to race in and new tournaments. After you beat the last X Games tournament you can still continue and gain levels and get achievements.

Winning races also gives you money, car accessories, and on the rare occasion, a car. You can’t upgrade your car parts, but you can choose what full-body advert (a liverie) is displayed on your car, and what bobble-head you want inside it. The only upgrades you can get are whole other cars, and you can just save your money and get the best of each type, instead of buying each one. By the end you should have a few million dollars, so you can go back and buy them all .

There are 5 main race types in Dirt 2: Rally, Rallycross, Trailblazer, Raid and Landrush. Rally, Rallycross and Raid are long non-circuit courses that are pretty challenging. The Rally races include a passenger who tells you what turns and jumps are coming, and you are not racing against others (staggered starts). Rallycrosses are the exact opposite; you race against 8 others and you have no passenger. Trailblazers are roughly the same as Rallies, except for the cars you can use. Raids only use the big cars (trucks and buggies) and are also non-circuit races, but, like a Rallycross, you race against 8 others. And lastly the Landrush, which is the same as the Raid, but takes place on a circuit. There are two special races, Gatecrasher, which requires you to break through stacks of blocks while being timed, and Domination, an elimination race.

Compared to other racing games like Forza, the choice of vehicles isn’t very expansive, and the stats aren’t very detailed. The different cars are a mix of massive trucks, buggies, sleek compacts and off-road compacts. Each car is graded out of ten in three categories: Top Speed, Acceleration, and Drivability; don’t expect any more detail than that.

After playing for a while and getting bored of the same old grid, you should try the online. Finally a racing game has gotten it right; Dirt 2’s online racing is plain and simple, just get in and race. You are limited to the Rallycross, Raid and Landrush races, which makes sense. There are also random ranked races you can do, and it takes you time and places you on the leaderboard.

A unique feature incorporated into Dirt 2 is the Flashback. When your car is damaged beyond racing conditions, or you spun out and lost your place, really whenever you feel like it, you can use Flashback to rewind a few seconds. This helps a lot so you don’t have to keep restarting the race if you mess up. Sometimes the crash cut scene goes on for too long and the flashback does not help, and that can get annoying. When you hit things like other cars, walls or rocks, your car gets either wheel damage or engine damage. Wheel damage just annoys your steering, and the engine damage doesn’t really do anything. After the race, if your car is damaged, is just seems to repair itself as opposed to the original Dirt. This is another one of those odd things that Dirt 2 seemed to overlook.

Graphics/Audio

On the Xbox360 and PS3, Dirt 2 looks fantastic, but on the PC it looks more than fantastic. If you happen to have a new graphics card that supports DirectX 11 graphics, this game is like putting a juicy steak in front of a starving dog, and that starving dog is you. Every cloud of dust and splash of water is so real, it could bring tears to your eyes. It was a great idea to wait out the few months and update the graphics to DX11, because it’s the best animation I’ve ever seen.

The other racers in the game are voiced by the real racers, and voiced well. Pounding engines and screeching tires make up most of the sound in the game, and they are done very nicely. There is a slew of music in the game which can be easily muted or changed. It should be noted that Dirt 2 is the first PC game that uses Blue Ripple Sound’s Rapture 3D sound engine by default, and it completely immerses you in the thrill of the race.

“A Japanese news web site claims that the new hardware will have ‘about 10’ games available for launch this fall.”

Japanese news service recently announced that there will be “about 10” games released for the PlayStation 3’s new motion controller this Fall. Unfortunately, the author did not go into detail about any of the games themselves. However, the Japanese counterpart site claimed that there will be games based on pet training, and sports, similar to what Nintendo has released for Wii and DS.

This announcement came days after Sony announced the delay of the controller from Spring of this year to sometime in the third quarter. The reason for this was to “have a comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the motion controller, not only from SCE Worldwide Studios but also from the third-party developers and publishers, whom we have been working closely with.”

It is not known whether these “ten” games will be exclusively developed by first-party companies or third-party developers, although both Capcom and EA Games have expressed interest in creating games for the new add-on. No developer or title list has been released but it is safe to assume that the usual suspects will be releasing products in the coming 12 months.

Sony’s answer to the Wii has still yet to be named, although the most recent rumor has it that it will be called “PlayStation Arc,” due to a web site being copyrighted by Sony Computer Entertainment. First shown off at E3 ’09, the wand controller itself closely resembles the Wii Remote, with buttons on the front. What sets it apart from Nintendo is the compatibility with the PlayStation Eye, a camera available for PS3. This Fall holds the release dates for both this and Microsoft’s “Project Natal,” and a brutal competition between the two companies is guaranteed to ensue.

After an avalanche of emails querying whether Game Copy Wizard actually works, Computer Game and Console Reviews has decided to release this statement…”YES IT DOES!!!”

Game Copy Wizard

First of all, we are only endorsing backing up games that you already own. This is entirely legal and we recommend it. It is your right to back up any software that you already own. By doing this, you are saving your original version from getting scratched and lets face it, it always happens. As games are very expensive, anything that stops you scratching your discs is a worthwhile investment. You get to preserve your game in mint condition, whilst playing it to your heart’s content.

All formats are covered, be it PC, PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo GameCube or even the Sega Dreamcast. DVD’s and Music CD’s are also provided for. You literally will never ruin an original disc again. Regarding the whole process, it really is easy. All you need is a PC and blank DVD’s. After installation, just run the program and presto, your back up is complete. The software comes complete with manuals and the support offered is excellent (you won’t need it though as everything they give you works exactly as they claim), we just asked a question as a test and were very happy with the response. As games are always evolving, so will Game Copy Wizard. Buy purchasing it, you are covered for life with automatic updates.

With some old games which are small, its possible to actually put more than 1 onto a DVD. The software also acts as a video file burner, so you can convert any video file on your PC to DVD, and watch it anywhere you choose.

Game Copy Wizard is a must have program for Gamer’s. You can visit the site here. If you have questions, please leave a comment below and one of us will get back to you.

Design is very appealing; Downloading games is more convenient than leaving the house; Can play music, watch video, save photos; PlayStation Store has an enormous library; Stunning graphics near the PS2 level; Fantastic audio; Free, built-in Wi-Fi web browser; PS one games can be shared with the PS3 console; Faster loading times than other PSP models; Can be synced with a PS3 controller; Fast, smooth online multiplayer

Cons

Cost is way too expensive; Terribly short battery life, even in sleep mode; No method to transfer UMD games to the system

Summary

Sony releases a complete redesign for its veteran handheld, and hopes to bring the gaming community into a completely digital world.

Introduction

The PlayStation Portable has been out on the market for five years now. It has gone through two redesigns, which have enlarged screens and are overall smaller, among other things. The PSP has not done poorly by any means; it has just been completely overshadowed by the might of the Nintendo DS. Hoping to decrease the amount of defeat, Sony releases the innovative PSP Go, an innovative and totally redesigned platform that will fight the DS alongside the other PSP models.

Features and Design

The most noticeable difference is obviously the appearance of the system. The Go has said good riddance to the flat, brick-like structure of previous models and has adapted a slide function. When closed, only the top portion is visible. This is where the speakers and the PS button are located, along with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi indicators. On the top of the console are the two shoulder buttons (which are very smooth and easy to use), a backlight button that can be pressed at any time, volume buttons, and a mute button. On the bottom are the headphone jack and the USB port (which only accepts a proprietary cable) for charging and connecting to a computer or PS3. On the left side are the M2 memory stick slot and the wireless switch for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Finally, the power slide is on the right side of the system. So far, the buttons are all extremely useful, and are positioned perfectly. When the Go is on, but has been closed, a clock will appear on the screen, and can be switched out to a calendar. When pushed up, the system’s true control panel is revealed. As before, the directional pad is on the far-left and the four action buttons on the far-right. In between these, from left to right, are the analog nub and the select and start buttons, respectfully. I’ve found that the select/start buttons are somewhat difficult to press, namely due to them being so close together, small, and barely elevated from the surface. In the direct center is the microphone. Overall, the design of the console receives the highest ratings, and is definitely an improvement from the PSP-3000, disregarding the smaller screen.

After you turn the PSP Go on and put in your information, the menu, the media bar, is revealed. This is where everything can be accessed. The PlayStation Store can be found on the far right, and then as you go left, many more options are displayed, such as the web browser, remote play, Skype, your music, video, and photo folders, and overall settings.

I’ll try to discuss these piece by piece. You can save a large amount of music, pictures, and videos to your Go with the 16GB it comes with, and store even more by purchasing a memory card. The photos can be saved from the internet, to be viewed at any time. They can also be downloaded for free from the Store. Any picture can be set as a background. Additionally, the Go can be connected directly to a digital camera for a quick transfer. The music is also great, but it is impossible to create a playlist of any kind without using the Media Go software packaged with the system. Although free, it is quite hard to manage. You can listen to music at the menu, but not during gameplay or while online.

The amount of things the PSP Go can do is simply staggering. Any potential buyer of one must know all these before purchasing. In fact, everyone should. With its Wi-Fi, it can browse the internet with fairly quick speed. While online, one can save bookmarks, and images to their hard drive. Surprisingly, you can have three tabs up at the same time, for optimum browsing. Furthermore, the PSP Go can do a handful of neat things when connected to a PlayStation 3. For example, connecting any PS3 controller and PSP Go to the PS3 system will allow the PS3 controller to function with any PSP game. While amazing, this has its drawbacks. The right analog cannot be used, due to the PSP’s one analog nub; the fact that this process must be redone every time the controller is synced back to the PS3; and the very requirement of the PS3 itself. Also, the PSP Go can be used to “play” the PS3. When connected to the PS3, the Go can perform Remote Play, which allows the PS3 to be accessed, in a sense, on the Go. While you can’t play games, you can take advantage of nearly every other offering that’s on the PS3.

The PlayStation Store offers an enormous library of content that will certainly satisfy everyone. Besides games, one can choose from downloadable content, demos, themes, wallpapers, game videos, trailers, and even some game music. A majority of this is free and relatively small in size, making it perfect for a quick download.

But of course, the games are truly the most important item, the Go has plenty. One can purchase the majority of PSP games from the pre-Go era, along with every game released after October 1, 2009. Most of the games are priced fairly, with a lot of them matching or even beating the prices at retail. Full PSP games can take anywhere from one to two hours to download, which quickly becomes bothersome. Although this is necessary and more convenient, it can make one long for the UMD instead. Perhaps my favorite feature, however, is the “PS one Classics.” This library offers some of the original PlayStation’s greatest games, a great feeling of nostalgia, and it is constantly growing. On top of all that, the games are extremely low-priced, for only a fraction of the price they would be on eBay. Impressively, the games, once purchased, can be downloaded to the PSP Go along with the PS3. This option is extremely beneficial to owners of both consoles, due to the possibility of save data transfer. Coupled with fully customizable controls and screen size, these games add so much to the system. Depending on size, they can take anywhere from half an hour to an hour to fully download. Besides the full games and the Classics are the Minis and the PSN Exclusives. The Exclusives are relatively smaller games that were developed for the PSP, or occasionally the PSP and PS3. They are also relatively low-priced. The Minis are Sony’s answer to the sensation of the iPhone and iPod Touch games and apps that have been downloaded billions of times. These are extremely small games that cost next to nothing (except for Tetris, which has received the highest pricing due to its extreme popularity and ability to sell). These will hardly take up any space on the PSP’s memory, and take only a short time to download. While the PSP itself does not have nearly as many amazing games than other consoles, the PSP Go offers the majority of them and will forever be obtaining more and more titles.

The console comes with 16GB of memory built into it. For the avid, core gamer that purchases games frequently, this may not be enough. Fortunately, it can be doubled by purchasing Sony’s own M2 card. However, the PSP offers so few core titles that many will definitely not come across this problem. Though it has existed for five years, the PSP offers the smallest library of games than any other current-generation platform. Furthermore, there are really only a handful of critically-acclaimed titles. While many more great games will be released, the lack of good content is unnerving. On the other hand, this information is only based on sales figures and reviews aggregators, and what constitutes a “good” game is a trait that relies solely in the consumer. While it cannot be denied that the Go has a smaller library than others, the selection really should not hinder anyone from purchasing the system.

In short, the PSP Go is a brilliant entertainment device. With the ability to store music, games, movies, photos, and much more, it is a tremendously useful system. Some may think that the gaming community is not yet ready for the digital download stage, but I agree with Sony. By abandoning the disc and the cartridge, Sony has brought the world into a whole new era. The ways of the PSP Go are the ways of the future, no one can deny that. While slow sales and lukewarm response will thwart some of its success, everyone can appreciate Sony’s efforts in giving video games an evolution.

After years and years of unsatisfying Batman games, Eidos puts out Arkham Asylum, a stunningly brilliant superhero game of which the likes has never been seen before. Batman has always been near and dear to my heart as an avid reader of the comics, and the games have always been sub-par. But come late August, a revolutionary new Batman game set in a unique environment has risen from the depths of nothing: Batman: Arkham Asylum.

The Start Up

The opening scene is grim and dark, as rain pours on the Batmobile, spanning across the city to Arkham Asylum, Gotham’s own psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. When you get inside with the Joker in hand, you follow him and a few guards down to the depths of Arkham, where things get interesting. It seems as though the Joker had been planning this from the start, as he escapes his captors and gains control of the Asylum. Starting off with a quick intro to combat with the new FreeFlow™ Combat System, you battle several thugs and progress through the grounds, searching for various people and things. You quickly learn about your Detective Mode, where you can see inmates through walls, follow trails of various substances, and find otherwise hidden things, such as vent grates and weak walls. It’s an easy game to get into, and can be played respectably by both hardcore and casual gamers.

Gameplay

Of all the superhero games I’ve played, I must admit that this is the best of them. Never has there been such attention to detail, back stories, and personalities in a comic-based game. I’ve always been an avid Batman reader up until the day he died (rest in peace, Dark Knight) and know Batman and the Gotham crew like my own friends and family. The game plays like you’re classic third person action/adventure game with a small bit of RPG elements. You play as Batman as you go through the Asylum fighting inmates, solving puzzles, and advancing through the story to take back Arkham Asylum from the Joker and his accomplices. Immediately you are thrown into combat with the basic inmates, which is a sort of free flowing punch-and-kick type of combat with counters and take-downs. Starting off you have your Battarang and grapple, the Battarang can be thrown to daze enemies and hit the Riddler’s chattering false teeth toys. Pretty soon you learn about your Detective Mode; this is a modification to your sight that shows various things previously mentioned. It’s very handy when you are stuck somewhere, before you walk into a room to check for enemies, or want to find hidden things. At some points it’s used to follow substance trails such as alcohol in the air, blood and hand prints while tracking people down on the grounds, which you seem to be doing a lot of.

Unlike previous Batman games, Arkham Asylum blends combat, stealth and detective work on a superb level. The stealth is great, although sometimes it feels like you’re completely invisible during times in which you shouldn’t be. All over the Asylum there are convenient gargoyles in which you can grapple up to to observe a room and stealthily kill inmates who are perusing around waiting for you. To render enemies unconscious (Batman doesn’t kill people) in stealth you can do a flying kick form a gargoyle or raised structure and a take down or sneak up and do a sort of silent choke out. If you are caught by armed inmates, you are reduced to hiding up in the shadows and avoiding gunshots which can get pretty annoying.

Since 1948 the Riddler (Edward Nigma) has been using riddles and clues to lead Batman to his meticulously planned crimes. In Arkham Asylum he has left riddles and trophies everywhere and are a nice bonus if you feel like taking a break form the story and do some searches and puzzles. As you collect trophies and solve riddles you gain experience, which you also get from incapacitating inmates and bosses. After an amount of experience is reached, you level up and get to pick an upgrade; upgrades include new weapons like the Sonic Battarang, new combat moves, and armor increases. None of the upgrades are essential to the game, like “you need this upgrade to get to this part in the game”, but they do help a lot.
Progressing through the game, you meet a lot of classic characters including the Joker, the Riddler, Commissioner Gordon and Scarecrow. Scarecrow plays an interesting role in the game in the aspects of his psychoactive gas. If you don’t know, Scarecrow (real name: Jonathan Crane, a psychiatrist who specializes in fear) uses a variety of toxins that make people hallucinate that their worst fears are real and present. In the game, you encounter his gas multiple times; the room begins to shift, things begin to distort and move, and an eerie music plays as you walk onward to unknowing terror. As you pass through your hallucinations, you eventually come to an event where you have to avoid Scarecrow’s gaze. He grows exponentially, and you have to hide and run as he looks for you in a torn apart, circular version of the Asylum. This adds quite an enjoyable twist to the game, and briefly takes you away from the normal game.
Besides the regular story, you can do the Challenge Mode. The Challenge Mode is a series of unlockable, short challenges that involve combating inmates for points and stealthily taking down inmates which is timed. While combating inmates, you earn points through combos, counters, and special take downs, and in the stealth challenges you take down armed inmates as quickly as possible using your various acquired techniques. When you finish, your points are added up and are submitted to the online leaderboards. Challenge Mode is a nice addition if you feel like honing your skills and taking a break from the story.

Overall, the gameplay is phenomenal and Eidos has finally achieved making a good Batman game. There are only a few faults in the game and they don’t pop up too often. At some points, there’s no clear indication of what to do next, and you’re reduced to looking around everywhere, trying to figure out or remember what you have to do. Having said that, there isn’t much else to complain about in Arkham Asylum.

Audio/Graphics

The audio of Batman: Arkham Asylum is fantastic, with great voice actors and environment noises such as the music during Scarecrow events. It’s good to see that they didn’t take any of the recent movie actors for voice acting (apparently Heath Ledger wasn’t answering his phone) and instead went with the fantastic voice actors from the Emmy award-winning 90’s cartoon show Batman: The Animated Series. There seems to be a general lack of interest from movie actors that are asked to voice games. Besides the voice acting, the music and environment sounds are done wonderfully; every drip of water and intense fighting score just adds to the enjoyment of the game.
As far as graphics go, Arkham Asylum is one of the best looking games that has come out in the past year. The look of the Asylum is grim and rigid, and the whole darkness of the game adds so much depth. Characters are rendered greatly, and the emotions seem life-like at some points. Motion is fluid and overall the game looks great.

Introduction

Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. A company that puts all of its heart and soul into its games, and the outcome is more than worth it. Dragon Age: Origins is a platinum medal among gold. With an expanse of RPGs in this past decade, it’s difficult to narrow it down to the best. But what most players agree with is that DA:O is one of the top RPGs this decade, if not the top.

The Start Up

Like any RPG, you get the character selection/customization. I first tried making a Dalish Elf, These are the elves that have stayed in the isolated forests, hiding away from the humankind. It started out with a nice intro to the story line and to the Dalish Elves. After the video I immediately was thrown into decisions, whether or not to kill a few humans wandering through our woods. Of course I had to let them go, I know how humans are. They also tipped me off about some ruins that I ventured into with an elvish friend and delved right into an easy, short intro to combat. The easy switch between the zoomed out, over head zoom and the up close “adventure” camera view with the scroll wheel makes the switch between combat and walking very fluid. The first part of the game is very forgiving and eases you into the style which I was not used to. It’s like a cross between RTS and classic Third Person, packed with lore and action and quests. The cut-scenes are absolutely gorgeous, and the voice acting is top-notch.

My second character I made was the generic, Human Noble. I generally don’t like melee fighting in RPGs but I decided to push this game to its limits. This proved to be a great choice. Even the very last thing I ever wanted to be was a lot of fun. You start off with the choice of having your dog as a companion, and I don’t know how you could pass up a chance like that. During gameplay, you may only have 4 companions out at a time, so you’re generally fighting in a team. I decided to be a tank (defensive character) to help hold enemies and take the blunt of the damage. The combat and tactics were pretty easy to get used to, but the gameplay is incredibly difficult.

Graphics

While playing on maxed out graphics with a new GPU from the Radeon 5800 series, it’s an incredibly beautiful game. The faces are the best I’ve seen, the armor and weapons are incredibly detailed, and the environment is gorgeous to look at. Lighting and shading are at a perfect balance, each light has a nice glow and the darkness is greatly contrasted. Even the fire alone is just about the best fire I’ve seen in a game this far. It has this warm, comforting glow, with a strong lick and… well, it’s really nice looking fire.

The detail in the game is unbelievable, after fighting, your characters are covered in blood specs, as opposed to the usual clean heroes in most games. People will notice eventually that each place, each forest, each dungeon and cave they go through is detailed and extravagant, along with it’s contents and enemies. The game is top quality for DirectX10 and only DX11 can beat it. It was a smart move using DX10 though, as not everyone has a DX11 GPU (recently released). Basically, the game is absolutely pristine.

Gameplay

This is one of the hardest and most frustrating games I have ever played, except for Street Fighter and Mega Man 9. The difficulty can be summed up as such: On the second quest, I had four characters, full health and was ready to fight. There were just two enemies waiting by a bridge over the swampy waters of the Wild. I figured “hey, easy enough, just tank ‘em and spank ‘em.” But no, I was mistaken, those two led us through bear traps and a multitude of more enemies. They overtook us time after time after time. It must have taken five tries to get by them finally. Within the first half hour of the game! On normal difficulty! It’s a great challenge. One feature that really took some time to get used to was the tactics. This bundle of menus determines what your character does when a certain event happens, such as if you character’s health is below 20% they will use a special block move. This really comes in handy for big fights where you can’t really keep track of everything every second.

Besides the occasional, jaw-gnashing difficult parts, the game is pretty straight forward and simple. Completing quests, continuing the storyline, gaining levels and skills, improving armor and weapons, it’s your no-surprises RPG. But what you don’t always come to see is the fantastic, unique, engrossing storyline. This rich tale sticks out in the RPG world because it’s so original and detailed. The Blight (a bunch of ugly, gray-ish guys) come around and try to kill everyone every couple of hundred years. They were old Magi that tried to take the heavens, but were defeated and cursed. There is an arch-demon that leads the blight and he must be defeated to end it. The Grey Wardens are a group of fighters that work to defeat the Blight with the help of the people, and you become one of these last Grey Wardens. You must work with three other fighters/adventurers (whomever you pick up) to delve further into the world with quests and objectives and fights. And yes, much like Mass Effect, there is a sex scene involved, it probably won’t be in the news quite as much because there’s no aliens involved. But anyways, the gameplay is fantastic, easy to get into, incredibly challenging and fun, and the storyline is great.

Each time you start a new character, you’re thrown into a completely different starting are with different choices and quests. As you progress, you choose your path depending on what you decide to do, so you could play through the game twice in two totally different ways. The replayability is staggering, because not many other games give you this much decision. The fact that it is solely one player doesn’t hinder the experience at all, and in my opinion is a better route to go, it would just feel weird playing with other people. Compared to other RPGs, Dragon Age: Origins is a gem; it has taken everything we love about RPGs and perfected it. BioWare knows how to make a great game, and I look forward to any sequels of this fantastic game.

Introduction

In 2008 Valve introduced Left 4 Dead to the world. It was hailed as one of the greatest multiplayer games, one of the greatest zombie games, and one of greatest games of the decade. Due to its new and thrilling gameplay, critics and consumers alike were able to look past its glaring faults. Exactly one year later, Valve released Left 4 Dead 2. Its announcement was initially met with calamity from fans of the original, and thousands were outraged. The gaming community was outraged at this rushed sequel, and many viewed it as an expansion. However, everyone’s worries were soon cleared when the game was released. This sequel is precisely everything a sequel should be, and more. It improves on every aspect of the original, quenching everyone’s thirst for a true sequel.

Graphics/Audio

Left 4 Dead 2 steps it up in the presentation field. There is a noticeable update from the original title. The environments, survivors, and infected have all been greatly enhanced, visually. The game now has chapters that are set in nighttime and daytime situations. The inclusion of sunlit levels is an extremely welcome addition to the series, for they provide an interesting new take on scenery and keep the player’s interest high.

One glaring problem with the first game was the severe graphic-quality reduction when playing split-screen. Fans will be pleased to know that even these graphics have been immensely improved, providing a more enjoyable experience for those gamers who take pleasure in sharing a television.

While the scenery in the original did vary, Left 4 Dead 2 provides completely new locations for every single one of its twenty-three chapters. Whether you’re making your way through a swampy village, sprinting atop a carnival’s roller coaster, or fighting through a shopping mall, you will absolutely never get bored playing this game. Every level takes place in a totally new and creative environment, which shows how innovative a developer Valve is.

As previously mentioned, the four survivors have also been refined in nearly every way. Their facial expressions, lip movements, arm gestures, and body language have all become quite noticeably more lifelike. Due to their wardrobe, it is also easier to distinguish them from each other.

Finally, the voice acting and script have been improved tenfold. The voice actors for Left 4 Dead 2 are surprisingly better than the first title. Ellis’ stories are hilariously spoken, and Nick’s reprimands are ingeniously well done. Coach, though he is a clear copy of Punch-Out’s Doc Louis, offers more witty and clever lines, along with Rochelle. The four survivors are more unique, deep, and all have more personalities than the previous four. The increased character depth definitely provides a more enjoyable experience for all.

Story

If you have played the original Left 4 Dead, you would understand how Valve dealt with the story. Or rather, how they did not deal with it. In the first game, the complete lack of a story and plot was something that immensely bothered myself and many others. Fortunately, this matter has had more attention brought upon itself, and Valve made it their job to add something of a plot to the series.

Although the story won’t win any awards, the inclusion of one is enough. The four survivors now have back stories, and their own histories. Each character is now totally unique and we finally know their backgrounds. Another much-loved addition is the story of the campaigns. In the first Left 4 Dead, all four campaigns were completely separate from each other and started at a different point. In Left 4 Dead 2, however, all five campaigns are brilliantly tied together and flow smoothly from one into the other. This addition, unquestionably, pushes the sequel high above its predecessor.

Similarly to the previous game, the in-game plot involves you and three other survivors battling and hacking your way from Point A to Point B, ending in a safe zone, or being rescued. Again, this has become even more enjoyable due to the intertwined campaigns.

Gameplay

Although the gameplay from the original Left 4 Dead was highly praised, Left 4 Dead 2 took everything and made it bigger and better.

Perhaps the most noticeable change is the amount of weapons in the game. The original title simply had six firearms and two “grenades.” In Left 4 Dead 2, the total count reaches above thirty, with five times as many weapons. Similarly to the last game, the firearms are based on a two-tier system. The weaker and less powerful weapons include the pump shotgun and submachine gun from the original title, as well as the chrome shotgun and silenced submachine gun. The pump shotgun is essentially the same as it was in the first Left 4 Dead, as is the submachine gun. The chrome shotgun sprays its ammunition out tighter than the pump shotgun, and each shell deals more damage. The silenced submachine gun deals more damage at close-range than the standard submachine gun, but suffers from low-accuracy and annoyingly high kickback. With each gun’s pros and cons, it is clear that there is a much larger emphasis on preference than there was in the original. This is even more noticeable in the higher level of firearms. The game offers three assault rifles: the combat rifle, AK-47, and the M-16 assault rifle (also known as the assault rifle in the original). All three possess their own qualities and characteristics, such as varying levels of accuracy, three-shot burst, kickback, stopping power, damage, reload time, and amount of ammunition. Additionally, there are two other shotguns: the combat shotgun and the tactical shotgun. The combat shotgun has very low kickback and is very effective against special infected. The tactical shotgun, also known as the auto shotgun from the original, releases more bullets per shot. Also returning is the hunting rifle, which stands beside the new sniper rifle; both of which vary in power and reload time. Yet another firearm added is the grenade launcher. This completely new weapon deals an enormous amount of damage to an infected, and is great for taking out large groups. In addition to these weapons are the pistols, which include a standard handgun and the magnum, which deals out far more damage than the other handgun but cannot be dual-wielded. With the wide selection of firearms, Valve has brought in much more variety and replay value to the game.

There are also two new types of ammunition one can use with their weapons: explosive ammo and incendiary ammo. The explosive ammo will explode anything it touches while the incendiary ammo will ignite the infected that it is shot at. Additionally, throughout the game the survivors can obtain laser-sight upgrades, which greatly improve accuracy on all firearms.

The pipe bomb and Molotov cocktail return from Left 4 Dead, but a new inclusion in the series is the boomer bile, also known as the bile bomb. Throwing this onto an infected of any kind will instantly draw the common infected to them.

Now for one of the greatest improvements to the series: melee weapons. Left 4 Dead 2 introduces the cricket bat, crowbar, frying pan, electric guitar, axe, katana, machete, nightstick, and chainsaw as methods of one-hit kills to all common infected. These melee weapons are extremely powerful, and will never break. Only the chainsaw will eventually be replaced with a pistol, after running out of gas. Melee weapons are unbelievingly fun to use, and one will certainly use them nearly as much as the standard firearms.

As in the previous game, health packs and pills can be used to regain health. While the health packs can be used to regain eighty percent of lost health, one can choose to carry a defibrillator instead. These can revive a fallen survivor who has lost all of their health to the infected. When used, the newly-revived character will have half of their total health, fifty. Pills, which are used to temporarily restore some health to a survivor, are joined by the adrenaline shot. When used, the player runs faster, can heal and revive faster, move quickly through water, reloads faster, and gains health temporarily. Again, Valve has given us many more ways to enjoy Left 4 Dead 2.

Lastly, Valve has added three brand new special infected to the series, while revising the previous five. The Boomer, Tank, Smoker, and Hunter have all had their appearances modified and look more gruesome, while the Witch is the only one with any major changes. While the witch acts the same at night, during the daytime she is completely different. It is during this time when she is known as the “Wandering Witch,” due to her traveling slowly across the chapter. Due to the fact that she is standing, it is much harder to tell her apart from a common infected, but is easier to sneak past and kill. In addition to these five are the Jockey, Spitter, and Charger. The Jockey is a short, humped infected that will jump onto a survivor’s back and lead them into dangerous situations such as a Spitter’s acid, a bunch of common infected, or a Witch. The Spitter will shoot balls of stomach acid out of her large mouth which will expand into a large pool upon hitting the ground. She will also leave behind a smaller pool of acid after being killed. This acid is extremely dangerous and can kill a survivor quite quickly. Lastly, the Charger is a new special infected that closely resembles the Tank. With one massive arm, it can throw, charge, bash, beat, punch, and grab survivors. This makes it a huge threat, and should be taken out quickly with top priority.

Replayability

Left 4 Dead 2 has a total of twenty-three chapters that spread across five unique campaigns, as opposed to the previous game’s twenty chapters. The campaigns Dead Center, Dark Carnival, Swamp Fever, Hard Rain, and The Parish are all somewhat longer and more difficult than all the campaigns in the first game. Depending on the difficulty, completing all five campaigns can take six to eight hours, which is roughly two hours more than the original title. While this is still fairly short, the game makes up for it with the online multiplayer.

The campaign can be played online with three other players, and Versus and Survival return with the new Scavenge mode. Survival remains essentially the same as it was in the last game, while Versus allows one to take control of the three new special infected (in addition to the old four). This has been made even more thrilling and fun than its previous incarnation, and will certainly be one of the most played modes. The completely new Scavenge mode is a nod towards the finale in the game’s first campaign, Dead Center, where four players must collect sixteen cans of gasoline and fill a generator or car with them, all while avoid the four player-controlled infected. Whichever team wins the most rounds becomes the final, true victor. In addition to these is the Realism mode, which is extremely challenging. Weapons do much less damage, Witches kill in one hit, the blue outline surrounding the other survivors is gone, and it is harder to spot firearms. As in the last game, the online is one of the main focuses of Left 4 Dead 2, and everyone should at one point try it out, for it will provide a satisfying experience to all.

Final Recommendation

Left 4 Dead 2 is simply one of the greatest games of the decade. It improves on every single detail of the original, and everyone who loved the first will love this one even more. The effects of the boycott are evident, as this game has received four times as many pre-orders than the original, and has sold nearly as much as the original did over a year in only two months. And with promised downloadable content, it appears as if Left 4 Dead 2 will become better and better. Though a relatively new series, its fresh take on the zombie apocalypse and exciting gameplay will be adored by gamers for many years to come.
